How to Score Band 8 in IELTS Writing Task 2

Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1, so getting it right has the biggest impact on your overall band. Here is the exact approach our Band 8+ students follow.

How to Score Band 8 in IELTS Writing Task 2
Consistent daily practice is what moves your band score.

Understand the Question Type

Before writing a single word, identify whether the prompt asks for an opinion, discussion, problem-solution, or two-part answer. Each type has its own paragraph plan.

Plan for 5 minutes

Spend the first five minutes mapping two main ideas and one example each. A planned essay always outscores a rushed one.

Build a Reliable Structure

  • Introduction: paraphrase + clear position
  • Body 1: first idea + example
  • Body 2: second idea + example
  • Conclusion: restate position

Coherence and cohesion are not about stuffing linkers — they are about logical flow between ideas.

Polish Your Cohesion

Use referencing (this, such, these) and a few precise linkers. Overusing “Firstly, Secondly, Moreover” actually lowers your score.

Band Level What it means
9 Expert Full operational command of English
7 Good Operational command, occasional inaccuracies
6 Competent Generally effective command despite some errors
5 Modest Partial command; copes with overall meaning
